While it is impossible to play perfect poker every time, a few basic principles can help you improve your game. One important rule is to avoid playing weak hands unless they have a chance of being strong on the flop, turn or river. The law of averages dictates that most weak hands are losers, and it makes little sense to get involved in a losing deal.
Another key rule is to “play the player, not the cards.” This means that you should try to figure out what type of hand an opponent might have and then work out how likely it is that their hand will beat yours. This can be done by studying their tells, which include the idiosyncrasies of their betting style, fidgeting with chips, ringing their fingers and other physical cues.
